Welcome to the first Monday in May of 2020. It is crazy to think of how much weight there is in that statement. The first Monday in May is simply not the day we were envisioning mere weeks ago. We have been in the Covid-19 world altering reality long enough that we are beginning to try to look ahead. This first week of May is also the beginning of International Coaching week. How do those things fit together?
One of my favorite coaching questions is "so what's next?" When a client has identified a dream or goal for the future, the vision is often too big, sometimes too overwhelming to see the close in, next right step. As we think about the post Covid world, I think all of us get stuck in the confusion. We just don't know what things will look like. Where will we be able to go? How will we gather? How do we keep ourselves and those we love safe? How do we care for those whose livelihoods are in jeopardy? There are more questions than answers.
It is easy in this environment to say "when will things be back to normal?" The answer to that is simply they won't. There will not be a time in the future that does not bear the stamp of this season. And maybe that's OK. There are things to be learned from this experience. What is something you have learned about yourself? How does it feel for you to think we won't be going back? It's OK to grieve the plans and expectations you had for this season.
I've also heard folks talk about needing to pivot, to completely change direction. Honestly, that doesn't feel right either. If we go back to all those questions and we don't yet have the answers, to pivot away from what we know, expect, and hope for seems harder than it needs to be. What if we could just lean into what's next? Rather than looking way out in the future, what is the next right step?
Sometimes the best way to get to those answers is to talk to someone what asks great questions. Let me know if you would like to connect and chat about your next right step.
Because you are Worth It!
